Methodology

Prior to the data analysis, I observed a range of Indonesian movie trailers, in order to determine the parameters of the study. Among the many film genres, this chapter considered the structures in romance drama movies as the most feasible to be segmented in order to produce a detailed multimodal analysis. Furthermore, the storyline in romance movies commonly revolves around the problems of two main characters. This feature facilitated the division of these trailers into narrative stages and hence, was useful for investigating the research objective. The ad hoc selection of data for this study comprised five movie trailers published in Indonesia between 2016 and 2018, namely Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2 (Data 1), Dilan 1990 (Data 2), Critical Eleven (Data 3), Eiffel I’m in Love 2 (Data 4) and Arini (Data 5). The length of the trailers was two minutes on average. The number of trailers and the length of each trailer were considered ideal to produce a thorough narrative genre analysis of each trailer. Analysis involved compiling detailed accounts of the involved language, image and sound in each stage of the narrative.

The data analysis was conducted in three steps. The first step involved a concurrent process to observe and identify the language, image and sound elements in the data, in order to divide the trailer clips into their narrative stages. Due to the multimodal nature of the movie trailers, each stage was analysed based on the co-deployed language, image and sound.
